Dr. Jill Reese

Dr. Jill Reese, recipient of the “Professional Development Award,” and Assistant Professor of Music Education, participated in the Smithsonian Folkways Certification course in World Music Pedagogy at the University of Washington.

Dr. Reese studied with Patricia Shehan Campbell—world-renown music educator, researcher, and ethnomusicologist—and artist-musicians, culture-bearers, and experienced teachers from around the world.  She sampled audio, video, print, electronic, and human resources in the 40-hour intensive course, which was aimed at developing an understanding of ways to teach musics of the world's cultures.

During the course she helped create curricular materials that focus on the music and cultural materials available at the Smithsonian Folkways archives. These materials will be published on its website for use by K-12 music and classroom teachers. Dr. Reese will be sharing what she learned about World Music Pedagogy with her students and other faculty members at SUNY Fredonia.
