SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Residence Life has announced TV and film major Joseph Lopez as the Student of the Month for September 2009. Lopez is a junior in the communications department, and hails from Houston, Texas. He was nominated for the award by Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. David Herman.

As President of the Media Arts Club on campus, Lopez is encouraging local youth to pursue education beyond high school through a weekly Media Arts Program he founded at the Boys and Girls Club of Dunkirk.

Giving his peers greater opportunity for creative projects, on campus he created the 24 Hour Film Contest with the Media Arts Program.

A Dean's List student, he is also organizing the 2nd Annual SUNY-wide Film Festival and has set a goal of doubling the amount of entries for this year's event.

He is currently the Community Relations Executive Chair of Leadership Corps, the WDVL Radio Show Producer, Assistant Photo Editor of “The Leader”, and was a participant in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Program.

Lopez says his favorite things about Fredonia are the campus, local community, and ultimately being recognized as more than just a number in the classroom.

“Fredonia provides an atmosphere where you can mold your own level of self expression through the students and professors around you,” he says.

In the future, he hopes to acquire an assistant director internship. After graduation he hopes to succeed in the field of directing feature films, preferably docu-dramas.
