The 2015 Kasling Memorial Lecture, “How Do You Compress Data Such as Text and Images?” will be presented by Dr. Ziya Arnavut on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 12:30 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.
The campus and community is invited to attend.
The main focus of Dr. Arnavut’s lecture is data compression and how to use it in everyday life. The topic has been a part of his ongoing research. He will explain optimizing data compression for images – such as how to shrink the size or change its resolution. Arnavut’s lecture will give the audience insight on what data compression is and how it can be used.
Dr. Scott Medler |
Arnavut is a professor and the chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences and has been teaching at Fredonia for 19 years. This past August he was the main guest editor of “Enabling Technologies for Network-Based Applications” in the Elsevier Computers and Electrical Engineering Journal.
The Kasling Memorial Lecture is named for Robert W. Kasling, professor of geography at Fredonia from 1946 to 1966. In honor of Dr. Kasling’s contributions to scholarship, the university invites a distinguished member of the faculty to share an insight into their research.
In addition to the Kasling lecture, the 2015 William T. and Charlotte N. Hagan Young Scholar/Artist Award recipient, Scott A. Medler, assistant professor of the biology, will be recognized during the event. Dr. Medler has been a member of the Fredonia faculty since 2011. His research focus is on the cellular and molecular organization of skeletal muscles and how these properties change in response to development, exercise and other demands.
