Once Upon a Decade

Distinguished Teaching Professor Clark Zlotchew has written a new book, “Once Upon A Decade, Tales of the Fifties.”

The book is a collection of 17 short stories, fifteen of them based upon the culture of the 1950’s.

The narratives tell of love and death, triumph and defeat and the tension between ethnicity and assimilation. Some stories present adventure on the high seas and others show a glimpse of life in Cuba. For example, a sailor who wants no more complications in his life falls in love with a young Cuban prostitute on the eve of the Castro Revolution, or two shipmates one white, the other black, learn firsthand about segregation in Savannah.

Dr. Clark Zlotchew is a scholar of the literature of Spain and Latin America. He has taught in the department of Modern Languages at Fredonia since 1975. In 1988 he received the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 2008, Zlotchew was chosen as one of nine individuals in the SUNY system to be promoted to “Distinguished Teaching Professor,” the highest honor that can be given to a faculty member.

Zlotchew has published over fifteen books (see Amazon.com page), including “Varieties of Magic Realism”, “Spanish at Your Fingertips”, “Voices of the River Plate: Interviews with Writers of Argentina and Uruguay” and various selections written and published in Spanish.
