Marielle Ali is the October 2009 Residence Life Student of the Month. From left are: Vice President for Student Affairs David Herman, Career Development Director (Interim) Tracy Collingwood, Ms. Ali, and Residence Life Director Gary Bice. |
The Department of Resident Life’s Student of the Month Committee selected Ali following her nomination by Tracy Collingwood, interim director of the Career Development Office, due to Ali’s extensive leadership experience both on campus and in the community.
Ali is pursuing a dual major in Political Science and International Studies, with minors in French and Leadership Studies. In addition to her academics, she has been a Resident Assistant in Nixon Hall for the past three semesters and holds leadership positions on campus as President of the Black Student Union and the Vice President of Sigma Iota Rho National Honor Society for International Studies. Ali was also an Orientation Leader during the summer of 2009 and was part of the Leadership Development Program, a class where she learned to apply leadership skills to her daily life. She has also been involved in many volunteer efforts within the community, including the Out of the Darkness Walk, Fall Sweep, Buffalo News Kids Day and Relay for Life events. She hopes to study abroad next summer in Morocco to improve her French and Arabic. After graduation, she plans to apply for the Peace Corps and one day work for a non-governmental organization focusing on human rights violations in third world countries.
She says her favorite thing about Fredonia is how friendly and welcoming the college is. She immediately felt a part of the college community and feels the faculty and students alike are very warm.
The Student of the Month program was implemented in 2003 to recognize students who are well-rounded, excel in their academics and contribute positively to the campus and community.
