Dr. Sherri (Sam) Mason, a pioneer researcher of the impacts of microplastics on aquatic life in the Great Lakes, has been invited to participate in a workshop in Paris to be conducted by the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) Working Group 40, a body that advises the United Nations on the scientific aspects of marine environmental protection.

The focus of the Sept. 11-14 workshop, hosted by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO), is to harmonize methods for the monitoring and assessment of marine plastics and microplastics in coastal and open ocean environments. The GESAMP was established in 1969 and is jointly sponsored by nine U.N. organizations.
