SUNY Fredonia’s Media Arts Club is giving students an opportunity to express themselves using old materials and techniques to produce art work on Friday, March 27 at noon in Room 321 of the Rockefeller Arts Center.

“Paint on Film” is an annual event that allows students to articulate their creativity in an old medium, as it was done before the digital age of Rotoscope. Students will be able to paint on clear 16mm film or scratch onto 16mm black film using markers, pens, paint and ink.

Rotoscoping is an animation technique that began in 1915. Animators use this technique to trace over live-action film movement, frame by frame, for use in animated films.

Originally, pre-recorded live-action film images were projected onto a frosted glass panel and re-drawn by an animator. This projection equipment is called a rotoscope and has been replaced by computers in recent years.
