The Fredonia women's tennis team defeated Cortland, 6-3, on its home court Saturday to improve its record to 3-1 in the SUNYAC and 11-1 overall.

The 11 wins represents a new single-season school record, besting 10 wins by the 2016 and 2017 teams.

It was perhaps the most hotly contested match all season.

Cortland opened No. 1 doubles with a 9-7 win, as Mia Hayes and Chloe Knapp defeated Anna Chiacchia (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Olivia Miller (Springwater/Wayland-Cohocton).

Fredonia's Sarah Bunk (Sayville/Sayville) and Mikayla Johnson (Lakewood/Southwestern) had a relatively easy win, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Jane Chiacchia (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Taylor Marelli (Riverhead/Riverhead) were taken to the limit, 9-8, at No. 3 doubles.

Fredonia claimed singles wins an Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 5. Miller defeated Knapp 6-1 and 6-1 at No. 2. In No. 3 singles, Bunk was up 6-0 and 2-1 before her opponent retired. Johnson cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 slot.

Jane Chiacchia won fifth singles 4-6, 6-3, and 10-5.

Anna  Chiacchia -- 5-7 and 3-6 -- and Marelli -- 3-6 and 1-6 -- fell at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

The Devils travel to Binghamton next weekend to take on Oneonta, New Paltz, and Plattsburgh to complete the conference schedule and regular season.
