Artists from both the campus and community (visual art, drama, music, dance, literary arts) can participate in a unique competition to help shape SUNY Fredonia’s future. The competition, titled “Let Your Voice Be Heard,” challenges artists to create works based on the ideas that will be the foundation of SUNY strategic planning for the next five years.

SUNY Fredonia student artists will compete for first, second and third place cash awards of $250, $150 and $50 respectively. One $250 cash prize also will be awarded to a community division (not a SUNY student) artwork. All art submissions will be judged in both artistic value and relevance to SUNY Fredonia’s strategic planning process.

Artists must be at least 18 years old and must submit with their work a typed statement that explains how the art addresses one or more of the six ideas targeted to be the foundation of SUNY Fredonia’s strategic plan. These ideas are: (1) helping new and existing businesses innovate, prosper and grow; (2) contributing to successful seamless education from birth through retirement years; (3) integrating health and medical research and care to improve public health and create economic impact and global influence; (4) researching, discovering and acting for smarter energy use; (5) providing critical community enrichment; and (6) nurturing a cross-national mindset to improve New York’s global competitiveness.

All entries must be in digital format, submitted on CD or DVD. The judges will accept short stories (10 pages maximum), poetry, film/video, choreography, musical compositions, visual art, multimedia presentations or original drama. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on Monday, March 7. Artists must submit a labeled CD/DVD containing a digital representation or recording of their artwork and a typed artist’s statement and entry form to a department office in English (277 Fenton Hall), Visual Arts and New Media (217 Rockefeller Arts Center), Theatre and Dance (212 Rockefeller) or the School of Music (Mason Hall main office). Artists can find entry forms online here or by contacting Katherine Levy  (716-673-3401) or Tim Frerichs (716-673-3811).

“We’re hoping this art contest will entice campus and community artists to give their input to the strategic planning process by tapping into their artistic processes. We believe it is crucial that SUNY Fredonia’s artistic community members respond in ways they find meaningful to create our plan for the future,” stated strategic planning committee member and music education associate professor Kate Levy. “The artists’ statements will be included in our committee’s analysis of input to the strategic plan.”

Community members who are interested in SUNY Fredonia’s future do not have to be artists to contribute their thoughts to the next strategic plan. They can offer ideas by completing any of the activities and surveys available on the Power of Fredonia website.
