More than 20 people learned what to do – either at home or at work -- in the event of an emergency by attending the New York State Citizen Preparedness Training. The event was hosted by the Division of Engagement and Economic Development at Fredonia.

Staff Sgt. Jason Hammond of the National Guard, conducted the Aug. 19 training program that outlined tools and resources to help citizens prepare for a wide range of disasters, to respond accordingly and recover as quickly as possible.

Key elements of the training to prepare for natural and man-made disasters were outlined and included: developing an emergency plan at home and workplace; building a kit consisting of emergency tools and supplies; being aware by signing up for NY-ALERT to receive emergency notifications and becoming involved in volunteer opportunities in community-based programs.

The training, which is being held throughout the state, was developed with input from the Division of Homeland Security, Emergency Services’ Office of Emergency Management and the Office of Fire Prevention and Control. Fredonia’s session at the Williams Center was offered free of charge and was open to Fredonia faculty, staff and students and community members.
