“Choking on Growth: China’s Environmental Crisis” will be examined at the next Lunch with the New York Times discussion on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at noon in the Reed Library Japanese Garden area. Dr. Guangyu Tan, a first generation Chinese American who formerly taught in China, will be the facilitator.
Dr. Tan, a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, taught English at Xi Hua University in China for three years. Her research interests are in equity in education, with a specific focus on migrant children’s education and girls’ education in China. Tan earned a doctorate in cultural foundations of education at Kent State University.
The New York Times has prepared a series of articles and commentary that examine the human toll, global impact and political challenge of China’s epic pollution crisis.
The monthly currents discussion, facilitated by faculty experts on campus, is presented by the Professional Development Center to provoke conversations on a wide range of news-worthy topics and is open to all students, faculty and staff. Seating is limited and lunch is provided. Registration is required and can be placed through the Professional Development Center’s website.
