The Office of International Education will be holding workshops for students interested in applying for the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program – awarding up to $8,000 in scholarship money to study abroad programs.
A maximum of $5,000 can be awarded to students not studying language. Those studying a critical need language can be awarded an additional $3,000.
Workshops, which will review application specifics and introduce students to award-winning essays, will be held throughout the month of September in the Williams Center Room S226B. Workshop dates include Friday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m., Monday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m., and Thursday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
Students that meet the scholarship criteria are encouraged to apply, as one out of every three applicants is awarded a scholarship. Eligible students must be a U.S. citizen, receive the Pell Grant as part of their financial aid package, and be accepted to or applying to a study abroad program for a year, semester, or summer that is not on the U.S. Travel Warning list.
Darlene Cruz, an International Studies major, was the first Fredonia student to receive the scholarship for study during 2015-2016.
Applications for the Spring 2016 semester are due Oct. 6.
