Registration ends April 12 for students as well as faculty, alumni and friends of SUNY Fredonia and the community to participate by giving a reading at the second annual “Albert A. Dunn Day of Poetry and Prose” on Tuesday, April 20, at S104 Williams Center.

The event, to be held during National Poetry Month, will honor Dr. Albert A. Dunn, professor of English who served SUNY Fredonia for 35 years until his passing in 2007, and celebrate his love of literature and poetry.

Proceeds will benefit the Albert A. Dunn Memorial Scholarship and Book Grant Endowment.

Individual readings, to be presented from 2 to 5 p.m., should be no longer than 10 minutes. The costs per reading are $5 for students, $25 for staff, alumni and friends of the college. This year you also have the opportunity to sponsor a student reader for $25. Those who would like to listen to the readings are also welcome. The program will be extended to accommodate all presenters. Individual donations may also be made. Refreshments will be served throughout the afternoon.

Linda Dunn believes a day of reading is a fitting tribute to her late husband. “We hope to honor his legacy by celebrating his love of literature,” she said. “Through the profound ideas and deep understanding of the human condition found in great literature, Albert inspired students to appreciate the immense power and beauty of well crafted words.” Mrs. Dunn will attend the program.

Last year’s event was the first and brought together approximately 50 participants. The inaugural event built up enough funds to allow for the first recipient of the Book Grant Endowment, which was awarded to Gary Baier. After this year’s event, University Advancement will be able to give the Book Grant Endowment to its second recipient.

Registration forms are available on campus and can be downloaded from the web. Readers may select preferred time slots. For more information, contact Heather McKeever at 716-673-3321. The deadline to register to give a reading is April 12.

This program is being sponsored by University Advancement, with assistance from the College of Arts & Humanities and the Department of English. The Dunn Scholarship will be given to a first-year student with a major in English or dual major that includes English; the Dunn Book Endowment will help students purchase fiction, poetry and drama texts.
