The people have spoken. The Fredonia Blue Devil mascot -- heretofore without an official name -- will now be called, "Fred." Last year, the Blue Devil had advanced to the semi-finals of the SUNY Mascot Challenge under the name "Mike". Following his success, a support for a name change began. Naming him "Fred" was a more natural tie in with the college name, Fredonia.
"Fred" received 53 percent of the votes. "Other" received 19 percent; "Mike" checked in at 14 percent; and "Dods" and "Steele" received little support.
When reached for comment, Fred was unavailable as he was busy melting the three feet of snow that fell on the area.
The Blue Devil first gained popularity last year when he defeated Sheldon from Oswego in Round 2 (3,080 votes to 2,636 votes) of Mascot Madness, before narrowly losing to last year's SUNY Champ, Hugo Hawk of New Paltz in the semi-finals.
