Breonna Henningham, a Public Accountancy senior from Akron, N.Y., has become the first student at Fredonia to be awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, the agency that oversees audits of public companies.
To be nominated for the merit-based scholarship, students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program in accounting, demonstrate interest and aptitude in accounting and auditing and adhere to high ethical standards. Expenses that can be funded by the scholarship include tuition, fees, books and supplies.
Under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, monetary penalties imposed by the PCAOB must be used to fund scholarships for students enrolled in accredited accounting degree programs. Congress created the non-profit PCAOB to review Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and conduct investigations for the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Ms. Henningham is a graduate of Clarence Central High School. Scholarships are designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in auditing.
