Students who savor opportunities to showcase finely tuned oratorical skills before an audience of their peers are invited to climb atop the proverbial soapbox at SUNY Fredonia’s annual Public Speaking Competition on Sunday, April 11, 2 to 7 p.m., in McEwen Hall rooms 202 and 209.

Students can register to compete from Monday, March 28 through Friday, April 2. Registration forms are available in the Campus Life Office in the Williams Center.

The event, sponsored by the Fredonia College Foundation and Golden Key International Honour Society, will be staged at 202 and 209 McEwen.

Organized by the Applied Communication Association, the contest requires students to deliver a six to eight minute speech in front of a panel of judges. Speech topics must fall into one of two categories: informational or persuasive. First-place winners in each category will be awarded a $200 cash prize; the second-place prize recipient is given a $100 award. New this year is a popular vote winner in each category, chosen by the audience. The winners of this honor will receive a gift basket.

“The idea behind adding this category of winners is to encourage contestants to bring their friends and peers for support,” said Elizabeth Saeva, Applied Communication Association vice president.

A reception will be held after the speeches.
