School of Music Assistant Professor Jill Reese has written an article, “Music and Mindset: Perspectives for Music Teachers,” that has been published in the December issue of School Music NEWS, the official journal of the New York State School Music Association.

In her article that focuses on mindset and the influence of mindset on music achievement, Dr. Reese offers suggestions that teachers can use to shape their interactions with students and inform students’ mindset and their perceptions of their music abilities and achievements.

“By carefully considering the type and quality of feedback we provide our students, we can contribute positively to their perceptions of their musical abilities and identities as musicians, and possibly contribute to their lifelong musical engagement,” Reese wrote in her conclusion.

Teachers can also help administrators, colleagues and parents of students learn about growth mindset and, in effect, begin to dispel the myth of fixed musical mindset, Reese added.

School Music NEWS is published eight times during the academic year and is distributed to NYSSMA’s 5,000 members.
