Fredonia’s Relay for Life is several weeks away, but it’s time for the campus community to begin taking their first steps to participate in the annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
Individuals or teams of students can engage in a variety of events, such as games that challenge their memory. Groups can also showcase their talent as singers or entertainers. But the focus of the gathering that will fill Steele Hall Arena on Saturday, March 25, beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing through Sunday, March 26, at 4 a.m., is on cancer victims and survivors and the need to raise funds for the Buffalo chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Students – either as individuals and teams – along with faculty, staff and community members are invited to begin signing up at www.relayforlife.org/fredoniaUNY. The current registration fee of $10 will increase to $20 on the day of the event.
The theme of this year’s event, the 11th annual at Fredonia, is “Wizard of Oz, There’s No Place Like Hope.” There will be remarks by university officials during the opening ceremony, followed by a survivors lap and caregivers lap on the indoor track that will be lined with luminaria bags. Assorted games, activities and student performances will continue into the wee hours of Sunday morning.
Planning is already underway to “Paint Cranston Purple” on Friday, March 24, the day before Relay for Life. The dining hall will be adorned with purple decorations and several menu selections will feature that color – all to build Relay for Life momentum. Diners will also be encouraged to wear purple.
Created by a partnership between the student organization Colleges Against Cancer and the Buffalo chapter of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraising effort that supports the American Cancer Society in its battle against cancer.
