Fredonia is offering aspiring young scientists opportunities to take their first STEM steps with two camps slated for late July and early August at the university’s new Science Center.

FREDcamp (Fredonia Research, Exploration and Discovery camp), for youngsters in grades six to eight, is slated for July 25 through 29. FREDmed (focusing on health, exercise and medicine), for students in grades six to nine, will run Aug. 1 to 5. Registration for each camp is due by Friday, July 1.

STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, is getting a lot of attention lately. Careers in STEM are on an upward trend, as the demand for people with these skills and knowledge continues to grow.

FREDcamp, to be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., will engage campers in activities that include biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics, in addition to camp craft and scientific art. Each day will include field and lab exploration, and topics including energy, sport science, food science and more. The goal is to engage young people in hands-on discovery activities in the natural sciences, math and engineering.

FREDmed, also slated for Monday through Friday, but from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., will engage students in learning about health, wellness, and careers in medicine and healthcare. Campers will participate in laboratory exercises and discussion groups to learn more about these topics. Each day will provide different learning experiences and there will be a mix of hands-on and active learning activities. The goal is to provide young people with an opportunity to explore health and medicine while having fun.

Both camps will be staffed by university faculty and graduate and undergraduate students. Participants will be required to bring a bag lunch for each day of the camp.

The cost of each camp is $179, and parent/guardian permission is required. For registration forms and information, go online to www.fredonia.edu/lifelong or contact the Office of Lifelong Learning and Special Programs at Fredonia at 716-673-3177.
