The Music Therapy Club, together with the music therapy department, will host a Music Therapy Awareness Week Feb. 21 through 26.
Events start Monday, Feb. 21 and the week will close with an interactive recital on Friday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall.All events are free and open to the public.
The Music Therapy department will be putting on its annual recital concluding the awareness week. The recital features students speaking about music therapy abroad, giving sample music therapy interventions, and performances of music ensembles. According to DeAnna Klapp, president of the Music Therapy Club, "All pieces of the program are designed to represent our professional competencies that we, as music therapy students, are expected to have capability of by the time we finish our internship."
The recital is interactive so audience members will be invited to volunteer for group experiences. For music students, the recital is also approved for credit as a MUS 120 event.
The week's presentations are:
Monday:
- 3 p.m. in Fenton 166--Kimberly Mancino will discuss her work as a music therapist at Lutheran Social Services in Jamestown, N.Y. Her presentation is entitled, "More Than a Sentimental Journey: Music Therapy with Older Adults." Mancino is a faculty member of SUNY Fredonia as well as an alumna of the program ('80).
Tuesday:
- 2:30 p.m. in Mason 2019 --Tom Gestwicki will demonstrate using the guitar as a therapy tool. The guitar is one of the primary instruments therapists use as it is portable and great for accompaniment. His presentation is entitled, "Playing Guitar 101." Gestwicki is a professor at SUNY Fredonia; teaching guitar classes and just recently retired from the campus print shop.
- 7 p.m. in Mason 2140--Hana Im will discuss her recent internship experience working with children with psychiatric disorders. Im's presentation is entitled, "Internship Experience in Music Therapy." Im is working on completing her psychology degree from SUNY Fredonia.
Wednesday:
- 7 p.m. in Mason 2019--Angel Bingham will talk about her current experience as a music therapy intern at Monroe BOCES 1. Her presentation is entitled, "Music Therapy & IEPs." Bingham will be finishing her internship in May and will return to Fredonia for her master's degree in Music Therapy.
Thursday:
- 3 p.m. in Mason 1080--Music Therapy Program Coordinator Joni Milgram-Luterman will give an overview of how music therapy has grown in Western New York. Her presentation is entitled, "Music Therapy in Western New York." Dr. Milgram-Luterman is the head of the music therapy department at SUNY Fredonia and has held this position for 11 years.
Friday:
- 8 p.m. in Diers Recital Hall--The music therapy department will be putting on its annual recital, concluding the awareness week.
