The School of Music at SUNY Fredonia is hosting a weekend celebration of 19th-century American band music Oct. 3 and 4. 

Nationally recognized scholars and conductors will be offering lectures, while  ensembles from the School of Music will be featured in a series of concerts highlighting the wind and brass music of early America, music of the Civil War, and the sounds of Sousa and Gilmore from the Golden Age of band music.

All events are free and open to the public.

Concerts

Friday:  

"Concert of Early American Wind and Brass Music," featuring the Fredonia Concert Band; 8 p.m., King Concert Hall. Guest soloists include Ralph Dudgeon (keyed bugle), Vince and Gabriel DiMartino (cornet) and guest conductors Frank Cipolla, George Foreman, and Donald Hunsberger.

Saturday:

"Band Music of the Civil War Era (featuring the Fredonia Wind Symphony) Guest conductors include Frank Cipolla and Donald Hunsberger; 3 p.m., King Concert Hall

"A Concert of Late 19th Century Band Music (featuring the Fredonia Wind Ensemble); 8 p.m., King Concert Hall. Guest soloists include Vince and Gabriel DiMartino (cornet) and guest conductors George Foreman, Frank Cipolla, Donald Hunsberger, and John Laverty.

Pre-Concert Lectures

Friday:

"Wind Scoring Practices of the 19th Century-An Overview of writing from 1810-1890 with Donald Hunsberger (Eastman School of Music)" 6:30 p.m., King Concert Hall.

Saturday:  

"The Military Band in Civil War America," presented by Dr. James Davis; 1:30 p.m., King Concert Hall

"Band Composers of the Late 19th Century," by George Foreman of Centre College: 6:30 p.m., King Concert Hall.

Talks & Masterclasses

Thursday & Friday: Brass Masterclass with Vince DiMartino (trumpet) of Centre College; 2 p.m. (both days), Diers Recital Hall.

Friday:

"The Keyed Bugle," a presentation by Ralph Dudgeon of SUNY Cortland; noon, Diers Recital Hall.

Saturday:

"The Band in the Age of Gilmore and Sousa," presented by Frank Cipolla; 11 a.m., Diers Recital Hall.
