Tied at 54, the Fredonia women's basketball team finished on an 11-3 run to defeat Penn State Behrend, 65-57, at the Allegheny College Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 18. Senior Jacque Law (Lime Lake/Pioneer) converted 7 of 8 free throws over the final 2:12 and finished with 21 points. Jenna Einink (Westfield/Chautauqua Lake) added 19 points and Alisha Szuimgala (Forestville/Forestville) had 12. Law and Einink both grabbed 8 boards to lead the team.
Tied at 54 with three minutes left to play, Fredonia took the lead on a layup by Einink. Fredonia scored the game's next seven points -- all from the free-throw line -- before Behrend got a three pointer from Autumn Byes to make it a 63-57 game. Law capped the scoring with two more free throws.
The third quarter ended with Behrend up 44-43. Law made a layup for Fredonia to open the fourth quarter. Behrend would never regain command, but did tie the game three times in the final quarter.
Behrend scored first and led by as many as six points in the first quarter. Tied at 14-all, Emily Lasher (Wilson/Wilson) nailed a free throw and a layup to put the Devils up three, 17-14, at the end on the first.
Fredonia led by as many as seven in the second quarter. The half ended with the Devils up one, 29-28. Einink had 13 points at the break.
For the game, Law shot 3 of 10 from the field, but made up for it going 14 of 16 from the line and dished out a team-high 5 assists.
Einink was efficient from the field going 9 of 13. Szumigala was 4 of 5 from the floor and perfect in 4 attempts from the charity stripe. She also grabbed 5 rebounds. Lasher added 8 points.
Fredonia shot 40 percent from the field to Behrend's 31 percent. Fredonia held the edge in rebounds going 20 of 28, while Behrend was 9 of 12. The Devils out-rebounded Behrend, 51-34.
Fredonia was slowed by 31 turnovers compared to 23 by the Lions.
Behrend (0-2) was led by Byes and Erica Woll with 17 points apiece.
