Fredonia students Chris Hoyt, John Cullen and Alexis Ziccardi received national honors in March from the 2016 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) in its 2016 annual awards competition.

In the Best Sports Play-By-Play (Hockey) category, Mr. Hoyt and Mr. Cullen bested teams from Robert Morris University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, for their call of Fredonia vs. Southern New Hampshire. Hoyt is a Communication – Audio/Radio major with an Athletic Coaching minor from Windsor, N.Y., and Cullen, a Communication -  Journalism major, also with a minor in Athletic Coaching, from Hamburg.

Ms. Ziccardi, a Communication – Audio/Radio major with a minor in Visual Arts and New Media, from East Aurora, received the national award for Best Student Manager, among finalists from DePaul University, Bloomfield Hills High School, Simmons College, Montclair State University and Goshen College.

Also named as finalists in the national competition were Fredonia students Alexis Ziccardi and Megan Lewandowski for “The Local Lo-Down,” in the Best Specialty Music Show category; and Dianna Hawryluk for “Halloween Abduction,” in the Most Creative Program category.

Professor Laura Johnson of the Department of Communication, advisor to Fredonia Radio Systems, noted, “The students of Fredonia Radio Systems are continuing the radio tradition that began nearly 40 years ago at the university under the leadership of Professor Emeritus Dan Berggren. As the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System grows, the FRS students keep rising to the challenge. I am very happy for the FRS Radio Team.”
