During the fall semester SUNY Fredonia students performed a variety of volunteer activities, including over 3,000 hours of community service.

Individual volunteers, athletes, student groups, as well as residence halls accomplished an array of tasks making a positive impact in the community and building sustainable partnerships.

Some of the activities students were involved in included: cooking and serving meals to families in need at the Chautauqua County Rural Ministry’s local soup kitchen; mentoring youth at the Boys and Girls Club; tutoring at Literacy Volunteers; teaching seniors how to utilize computers and enhance their quality of lives through social interaction at the WCA Home and St. Columban’s-on-the-Lake; assisted in construction of a family home with Habitat for Humanity; assisted in areas of child care at Campus and Community Children’s Center; fund raising for a variety of causes, and more. Some major projects included: White Cane Days, Youth Hockey Camp, Relay for Life, Campus Wide Donation Drive, Aids Walk, Out of Darkness Walk, Memory Walk, “I Am” Program, (Christmas) Tree Trot and much more.

During the Spring 2008 semester, the Office of Volunteer and Community Services, in conjunction with its advisory group, will sponsor the second program in a series of, “Engaging in Our Community,” with a focus on Students and Service. The goals of the forum are as follows: to increase student involvement in volunteer and community services; generate community awareness about local volunteer opportunities; and present accomplishments and progress that students have made in terms of volunteer services. Moderators of this event will be Associate Professor David Rankin of the Department of Political Science and Coordinator of Volunteer and Community Services Joyce Harvard Smith. For further information pertaining to this event or other volunteer/community service opportunities, contact Ms. Smith by email or at ext. 3690. Student groups should contact AmeriCorps VISTA liaison Steven Bonanno.
