Five SUNY Fredonia musical groups will perform at the Hairy Lemon on Friday, April 16 at 9 p.m., to benefit the Student Emergency Relief Fund for those students who lost their homes in an apartment building in downtown Fredonia one week ago.
Admission is a suggested donation of $5, and the concert is only open to those 21 or over due to the bar setting. Those who cannot attend but want to help are encouraged to join the Facebook group “Supporting Fredonia Fire Victims,” or make a separate donation.
On Monday, April 5, a fire broke out in the an apartment building in downtown Fredonia, which was predominantly occupied by SUNY Fredonia students.
McGinnies Hall resident Patrick Woodward and Frank Tierney, the dorm’s Resident Director, teamed up to organize the concert. Campus a cappella groups Premium Blend and Some Like it Hot are set to perform, as well as Murphy’s Men, Colors in the Air, and Pardi Gras.
“All of the groups performing know people that were affected by the fire,” said Tierney. “We’re doing our best to raise money and awareness to the cause and make sure that our friends get back to a normal college life.”
One of Premium Blend’s own members, Chris Piro, is one of the students whose apartment was destroyed. “Chris has been in the group for over two years, and not only is he our treasurer, he’s a close friend of all of ours,” said the group’s president, Tony Scardace. “Our group is like family, and we want to help him out, just as we would any member of the family.”
The 20 students affected have already received generous care and assistance from various levels of the campus and broader community. To see an updated list of the steps being taken to help our students, click here.
