A group of Fredonia students will devote their spring break to help out the less fortunate through Habitat for Humanity.

Through the Alternative Break Program, coordinated by the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice, nearly two dozen students from a variety of academic disciplines will devote much of their week away from classes, March 15 to 19, to serve Habitat for Humanity in Charleston, S.C.

The importance of community-based social service programs, community action efforts and non-profit organizations is the focus of their service trip. Students will participate in on-site building activities and the refurbishing of a home for a future homeowner, as well as Restore, the organization’s community-based retail store that accepts donated furniture and household appliances and sells them to community members in need.

Daniel Galusha of Seneca Falls, a senior majoring in Psychology and Sociology, and Jeannie Galbraith of Brockport, a senior majoring in Social Work, are serving as program managers. Dr. Rolanda Ward will accompany the students, including majors in Social Work, Communication Disorders and Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Communication/Video Production, Sport Management, Public Relations and Criminal Justice.

Charleston Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit Christian housing organization that works with people in need to build decent, affordable housing.
