Three students from the State University of New York at Fredonia Department of Computer and Information Sciences have been awarded full scholarships for the 2014 summer program at the School of Software Engineering at Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) in China from June 9 to 23. Mohamed Sadek from Long Island, Julian Anjorin from Liverpool, and Mitchell Skorma from Hamburg, N.Y., were selected from numerous applicants for the all-expense paid scholarship offered by BJTU.
Beijing Jiaotong University also offered partial scholarships to Fredonia students, waiving the tuition and program fees. Dan Sturniolo of Williamsville was the recipient of a partial scholarship to attend the summer program.
Both opportunities came as a result of an on campus visit from Dr. Yuliya Sharkun to Fredonia from the International Affairs Center at BTJU.
Reneta Barneva, chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, invited Ms. Sharkun to campus to give a guest lecture on the unique program. It was at this time that Ms. Sharkun announced the 2014 Summer Program Scholarships that were open to all Fredonia Computer and Information Sciences students. The summer program at BJTU combines the most cutting-edge technologies with Chinese cultural experiences. A hands-on course on mobile programming will be taught by experts from Microsoft. The students will also have the opportunity to visit famous cultural sites and learn the basics of Chinese language. The exposure combined with real time practical projects along with the learning process, team work and the collaborative environment with students from diverse culture and nationalities will make for a unique and educational experience for the students.
As a leading university both within China and internationally, BJTU is amongst one of the first universities authorized by the central government to enroll overseas students, and has, to date, successfully trained 3,200 foreign students and visiting scholars originating from more than 100 different countries.
Fredonia students prepared for their trip with the help of the International Education Center. Provost Terry Brown and the staff of the International Education Center discussed future collaborative opportunities with Dr. Sharkun.
