Fredonia students will be able to show their support for National Girls and Women in Sports Day and female student-athletes by donning commemorative t-shirts at the Blue Devils’ basketball doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, Jan. 24, and the following week on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
Fans can pick up National Girls and Women in Sports Day shirts at both the men’s game, which tips off at 2 p.m., and the women’s game, which starts at 4 p.m., courtesy of the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Community members and their children have also been invited to the games. Admission for adults has been reduced to $3, while children under the age of 16 will be admitted free.
“We aim to show our community the benefits associated with collegiate athletics participation,” said Megan Valentine, assistant director of Athletics and Recreation and organizer of the event.
National Girls and Women in Sport Day, first celebrated in 1987 to honor Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman, who passed away due to Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986 after competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan, has evolved into a day to recognize past and current sports achievements of all female athletes and to advocate for equality and access for girls and women in sports.
Students are also invited to wear their commemorative t-shirts on Wednesday, Feb. 4, which is the national observance of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
