As part of this year’s celebration of Black History Month, the Black Student Union of SUNY Fredonia welcomes duo Milton “Rahnik” Jackson and Kendall “Chosen” Exume , of Poetry to the People.
This will be their 5th performance held at the university. The two will perform their works for students, faculty and staff, community members and the general public on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Horizons Room at SUNY Fredonia. Admission is free of cost.
Both Rahnik and Chosen are graduates of Eastern Connecticut State University where they studied History and Social Sciences and Business Information Systems. Rahnik is author of the three anthological works “Life, Liberty and Love,” “Fire Light: Some Kind of Wonderful,” and “Freedom; Next Exit.” Chosen, a performer for over half a decade, is the author of “Stimulation Through Words.” Recently, as a joint effort Poetry to the People released “Defying Gravity: I was Chosen,” a book written to address issues of domestic violence, relationships, sexual awareness, extreme poverty and more. Both poets have been awarded the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Distinguished Service Award for their services in social justice and advocacy.
A unique experience featuring an authentic blend of culture, conflict, social and sexual responsibility, awareness and the poetic theme of love, Poetry to the People is an award winning group whose message is clear: Poetry is Power! Through the use of their powerful words Rahnik and Chosen hope to bring different demographics together in understanding through their poetry readings. They ask “When was the last time you saw Blacks, Whites, Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, Italians, Iraqis, Israelis, even the Greeks get together in peace?”
