SUNY Fredonia's Theta Iota chapter of the Sigma Kappa sorority received a national award for "Outstanding Public Relations/Programming" at the 2011 Collegiate Officer Training School (COTS) in Indianapolis, Ind.

The award was announced on June 23 at the opening banquet with over 700 attendees at the national conference. It is presented to the chapter who exhibits the most outstanding on-going active public relations program in the following areas: alumnae relations, campus involvement, continued education as to the importance of positive public relations, community activities, participation in both local and national philanthropies, faculty relations, pan-Hellenic support, parent relations and alumnae newsletters. SUNY Fredonia’s Chapter President Emily Bird and Vice President of Philanthropic Services Mandy Kellner represented the campus and were awarded with a plaque.

Every other year, COTS is held in Indianapolis at the Sigma Kappa national headquarters. It provides members the opportunity to meet, learn and grow together with national officers, headquarters staff, the National Housing Corporation and the Sigma Kappa Foundation, as well as hundreds of Sigma Kappa chapter leaders, advisors and corporation board/property committee representatives from across the country.

Sigma Kappa Sorority, founded in 1874, is a nationwide not-for-profit organization of more than 147,500 women and 110 collegiate chapters dedicated to excellence in academics, personal character and service to society. Its purpose is to "provide women lifelong opportunities and support for social, intellectual and spiritual development by bringing women together to positively impact our communities."
