Area children will have the opportunity for a hands-on theater experience this summer through a special day camp at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
The SUNY Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance is producing a week-long day camp called “PLAYGROUND” to provide a campus-based cultural experience that reaches out to a small group of children in a unique way. The camp runs from Aug. 17 to Aug. 22.
Seventy area youth ages 8 to 15 will be enrolled on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $175 per participant and includes 12 class periods, an opportunity to be part of the cast or crew of SEUSSICAL JR., a T-shirt, daily snack and admission for family members to SEUSSICAL JR.
Weekday sessions are staged from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.; with morning sessions devoted to rehearsals, followed by a brown-bag lunch from home. Afternoon sessions will include rotating drama classes such as “The Writer’s Workshop” and “Acting Up,” other activities and a snack at no extra charge. Tech and dress rehearsal will be held the final day, Aug. 22, with an afternoon performance of SEUSSICAL JR. for family members.
Key members of the camp staff include: Ted Sharon, associate chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance; Laurel Walford, costume shop supervisor for the Department of Theatre and Dance; Amy Gawronski, former gallery director of the Rockefeller Arts Center; and SUNY Fredonia students and alumni including Marc de la Concha, Chelsea Claiser, Dan Lendzian, Julie Schillaci, Aundré Seals, and Autumn Stein.
Grants from The Fredonia College Foundation’s Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund and the Department of Theatre and Dance have made the camp possible.
