Over 300 SUNY Fredonia students are expected to participate in the annual Fall Sweep on Nov. 4, a leaf raking event created to strengthen the bonds between students and the residents of the village of Fredonia.
Following the leaf raking from 11 a.m. until just before 2 p.m., slated for homes on Temple Street, Maple Avenue, Central Avenue, and some side streets, there will be a reception at 2 p.m. in Dods Hall gymnasium on campus to which the community is invited to visit with students, faculty and administrators. President Dennis L. Hefner, Vice President for Student Affairs David Herman, and Fredonia Mayor Michael Sullivan will also participate in the event. Food will be provided by the Faculty Student Association and music by the student a capella group, “Much More Chill.”
Vice President Herman noted, “The Fall Sweep fosters goodwill with the community and demonstrates how fortunate we are to have such great students at Fredonia. The Applied Communication Association does a wonderful job organizing volunteers and the village residents have very positive interactions with the students. The Fall Sweep is proof that volunteerism is alive and well at SUNY Fredonia.”
The leaf raking event was originated in 2005 by the university’s Advanced Leadership Development Program and the Applied Communication Association as a way for SUNY Fredonia students to give something back to the community by lending a helping hand. In addition to the association, the SUNY Fredonia chapters of the Public Relations Student Society of America and the Golden Key International Honour Society, and the Department of Athletics, are co-sponsors of this year’s event.
