Three Fredonia seniors were women's track & field event winners Friday at the Rochester Institute of Technology's Tiger Invitational. The Blue Devils finished fifth of 10 teams.
Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern) won the 400 meters, Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y./Marion) the high jump, and Rachel Williams (Lockport/Lockport) the 20-point weight throw. Williams was also second in the shot put. All three also qualified for the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet March 2-3 at Ithaca College.
Feldman finished ahead of 23 women with 59.49 seconds in the 400 meters. Couperus cleared 1.58 meters (5 feet, 2 1/4 inches) in a field of 14 women in the high jump. Following a breakthrough last weekend at Brockport, Williams won the weight throw with a All-Atlantic Region toss of 15.06 meters (49 feet, 5 inches) -- her second straight 15-plus toss, prior to which she had only thrown 13-meters plus. She defeated 20 other women in the weight throw and was second in a field of 32 shot-putters with an effort of 11.86 meters (38 feet, 11 inches).
A fourth All-Atlantic Region performance came from senior Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown/Jamestown) with a second-place pole vault of 3.37 meters (11 feet, 3/4 inch). Meanwhile, sophomore Savia Moreland (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) finished second in the 60-meter hurdles in a season-best 9.82 seconds.
Each event was scored through eight places, which made individual event point-scorers out of junior Emily Maguire (Oakdale/Connequot), fifth in the 800; freshman Kayla Murray (Buffalo/West Seneca West), seventh in the pole vault; senior Madison Courtney (Getzville/Williamsville South), seventh in the 5,000 meters; junior Hannah Kurbs (Lockport/Lockport), eighth in the mile; and freshman Cassie Serafin (Cheektowaga/Depew), eighth in the triple jump.
The Blue Devils also finished sixth in the 4-by-400 relay and seventh in the 2-by-200 relay.
