The Communication department will be presenting two speakers from the Toronto film community to talk to students on Thursday, Oct. 28, in Room 209 McEwen from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Kate Lawrie Van de Ven curates the Toronto International Film Festival’s City to City program, a spotlight that looks at a different world city each year through the lens of its cinema.
Mark Van de Ven is a writer, director, story producer and editor working in film and television in Toronto.
Kate will discuss the film festivals along the following lines:
- In context within the international film industry as well as cinema culture specifically, using TIFF as an example
- From the perspective as a potential career path for students interested in media/cinema
- From the perspective of an insider scoop for students who may go on to submit their own films to festivals down the line... what programmers are looking for, what festivals overall are looking for, some ways to make smart choices about where to submit, how to submit, and how to navigate the festival scene once they arrive.
Mark will screen one his short films and follow-up by using it as a case study to walk through the process of getting something made outside of a school setting. He will discuss the decisions he made as a writer and director, some of the pitfalls he encountered and what he had to do to solve those problems, as well as what to do with such a project when it's finished.
