The Fredonia for St. Jude Club is joining forces with the SUNY Fredonia men’s soccer team to stage “Text for a Cure,” a unique fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, on Tuesday, Sept. 27. That date was picked to coincide with the team’s match against Westminster College at 7 p.m. at University Stadium.

By simply texting the word “HERO” to 50333 between 12:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. that day, anyone can make a one-time $5 donation to St. Jude, the internationally acclaimed pediatric cancer research center in Memphis, Tenn. After texting the word, donors will receive a message asking them to confirm the donation; to approve the donation, reply “yes.” The donor’s cell phone bill will reflect an extra charge of $5 in that month’s billing statement.

As many as five texts, for a total donation of $25, can be sent. Texts can be sent from any location.

SUNY Fredonia is part of the national “Text for a Cure” campaign that links St. Jude and participating universities. Each school selects its own unique word to text and make a donation.

Fredonia for St. Jude, which collected over $10,000 for the hospital in 2009, its first year of service on campus, has set an ambitious goal to raise $20,000 for this year.

Students, employees, alumni and friends are all encouraged to participate. To make an additional donation, visit www.stjude.org. To learn more about the campus event, contact SUNY Fredonia student Rebekah Bretl at 716-410-1808. To learn more about the hospital's research or to donate online, visit http://www.stjude.org.
