Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) and Zakk Hess (Newark, N.Y./North Rose - Wolcott), after breaking their own school records on March 7, have qualified for a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships on March 13 and 14 at Roanoke College in Salem, Va.
Morrison, with a school-record breaking time of 2:14.48 in the 800-meter run, is now ranked 16th in the country in the event. Hess's time of 8:21.91 in the 3000-meter run puts him at 11th in the country. The top 18 females and top 15 males in each event qualify for NCAAs.
The runners were awaiting other results from around the country before the qualifying times could be made official. Around 7 p.m. that evening they learned that they'd earned the trip to nationals.
The women's shot put record was also broken on Saturday by Nicole Desens (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Arlington) with a throw of 13.01 meters. She broke a record held since 1994.
Collin Mulcahy (Batavia, N.Y.\/Batavia) and Kyle Collins (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) each had personal best performances on their last day of indoor competition. Mulcahy ran for a time of 1:54.00 in the 800-meter run, while Collins tied his best performance in the 3000-meter run at 8:35.69.
