SUNY Fredonia earned the 12th spot among top public universities in the north in the 2008 edition of “America’s Best Colleges,” published by U.S.News & World Report. The exclusive rankings – which this year feature some substantial changes in methodology—will appear in the magazine’s August 27 issue which is on newsstands Monday, Aug. 20 and online currently.

In the larger category of both public and private institutions, SUNY Fredonia ranked 51st out of a top tier of the best comprehensive universities in the North. The college has been ranked as a best university in U.S. News & World Report since 1989.

“SUNY Fredonia’s continued ranking among the top public regional universities is a testament to the quality of our faculty and students,” President Dennis L. Hefner said. “Our success on these listings occurs because of our exceptional retention and graduation rates, which also place us seventh in the nation among public universities.”

The annual rankings – in which U.S. News groups schools based on categories created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching – provide an unmatched resource for parents and students contemplating one of life’s most challenging financial decisions. Fredonia is a “comprehensive university” because it offers both bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Using a proprietary methodology, the annual U.S.News & World Report rankings represent the most comprehensive look at how schools stack up based on a set of 15 widely accepted indicators of excellence, and help consumers evaluate and compare data compiled from more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools.
