Department of English Associate Professor Iclal Vanwesenbeeck published a piece on the first ever English translation of the Turkish novel, “Reckless,” by H.A. Toptas.

Dr. Vanwesenbeeck’s work focuses on the translation by Maureen Freely and was published in the most recent issue of the World Literature Journal. The story is about a man’s haunting past, serving on the Syrian border with the Turkish army. As a bestseller in Turkey, the book addresses masculinity, the militaristic culture and memory.

Vanwesenbeeck has also written various articles on Middle Eastern, Turkish and Renaissance literature. She translated the Renaissance play, “Selimus” into Turkish, which was the first ever translation of the play. She also reviews manuscripts for the Syracuse University Press Middle Eastern Literature series and regularly reviews books for Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA), Middle East Studies Association (MESA) and other peer-reviewed journals.
