Fredonia’s Veterans Affairs office will be holding several events in honor of Veterans Day.

Veterans Week at Fredonia is slated for Monday, Nov. 2 to Friday, Nov. 6, a week prior to the national observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11. The week will give campus and community members the opportunity to honor and remember the men and women who have served the U.S. through the many branches of the armed forces.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, author Brian Turner, who served for seven years in the U.S. Army, will be speaking along with a screening of Dr. Rob Deemer’s composition of Turner’s poem, “Eulogy.” The event is at 6 p.m. in 105 Fenton Hall. “Eulogy” is based on Turner’s narrative of a soldier who takes his own life on the battlefield in Iraq. Dr. Deemer’s composition was performed at Carnegie Hall in March. For more information on Brian Turner, visit http://www.brianturner.org/.

On Thursday, Nov. 5, Matt Gallagher will present a talk titled, "Diversity, The Human Spirit, and War" at 6:30 p.m. in Room 105 of the Science Center. Mr. Gallagher is an author as well as a former U.S. Army captain and Iraq war veteran whose writing consists of his experience in war. His appearance is part of the 2015-16 Convocation series, "Rediscovering the Human Spirit."

Veterans Week will conclude with Fredonia’s 8th annual Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 6, at 3:30 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. The Remembrance Ceremony provides a forum through which campus and community members gather to show their gratitude towards veterans.

The speakers for Veterans Week are sponsored by the Veterans Affairs office, Dr. Iclal Vanwesenbeeck and Veterans Affairs Administrator Mark Mackey. Events are sponsored by the Convocation Committee and Williams Visiting Professorship Fund.

Fredonia Veterans Affairs Office welcomes all active duty service members, veterans, and dependents, and strives to assist them with the transition from military to academic life. Student veterans on campus reflect over 142 years of cumulative service to the U.S. military and 24 years of combat experience.
