Update March 16, 2011: More than 165 pounds of food was collected last week during Operation Breakfast Rescue. Student volunteers, including many from Delta Chi, collected dry cereal, pancake mix, baby formula, breakfast bars, canned fruit and coffee to benefit Chautauqua County Rural Ministry. Assistance was also provided by Daniel Reed Library, TJMaxx and SUNY Fredonia Facilities Services/Custodial.
SUNY Fredonia’s Volunteer and Community Service Department will host its sixth “Operation Breakfast Rescue,” an annual breakfast-food item donation drive that benefits the Chautauqua Country Rural Ministry (CCRM), a United Way, grassroots advocacy agency that meets the needs of the homeless, working poor and disenfranchised in Chautauqua County.
The breakfast food items can be dropped off on Friday, March 11 in the Williams Center, G-138 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Additional donations, can be placed in boxes which are located in the Daniel A. Reed Library on Wednesday, March 9th and Thursday, March 10th (all day).
Over 315 pounds of food were collected last year. Among some of the items were oatmeal, cream of wheat, a variety of cold cereal, pancake mixes, breakfast bars, baby formula, canned fruit and other shelf-stable breakfast foods.
Operation Breakfast Rescue is led by Joyce Harvard Smith, Coordinator of Volunteer and Community Services, with assistance from VCS intern, Kristen Hadeed. This special event is sponsored by Volunteer and Community Services along with Delta Chi, and the Daniel A. Reed Library.
