Yasuki Hirata, of Otsu, Shiga, Japan, has been named January Student of the Month by Residence Life. He was nominated by Jacob Czelusta, assistant director of International Student Services.

Mr. Czelusta nominated Yasuki for his creation of and involvement in the Japanese Club and collaborative efforts with other campus groups. Yasuki spearheaded the creation of the Japanese Club, and serves as its current President. He also teaches Judo in a Karate Connection MMA class and is present in the Global Connections lounge.

When asked about his favorite thing about Fredonia, Yasuki said “My favorite thing about Fredonia is the people in the community who are really supportive. Since Fredonia is a small campus, I feel closeness with other students, faculty and staff members. They are all cooperative in helping each other.”

Yasuki will be graduating this May with his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management and will be returning to Japan to pursue a job with Panasonic. During the rest of his time at Fredonia, Yasuki hopes to make more people in the community interested in Japanese culture. In addition, he would like to offer information to those interested in studying abroad or visiting Japan in the future.

The Student of the Month program was implemented in 2003 to recognize students who are well-rounded, excel in their academics and contribute positively to the campus and community. Those who would like to nominate a student should visit www.fredonia.edu/student-life/residence-life/student-month.
