The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders at SUNY Fredonia will offer its first support group meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. to assist stroke and head injury survivors and their families in recovery and also provide educational information regarding their experiences.

Group meetings are open to the community and include activities to help stroke and head injury survivors use compensatory strategies to improve communication skills, and provide educational information. The meetings also serve as an opportunity to socialize and share personal experiences.

The support group was started in 2004 by clinical supervisor and Stroke/Head Injury Support Group Coordinator Julie Williams as a source of educational and support for stroke and head injury survivors. SUNY Fredonia graduate students also assist in activities and support group discussions.

Group meetings are held in W118 Thompson Hall on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. There will be six meetings in Fall 2010. They are free of charge with light refreshments provided.

To learn more contact Ms. Williams at Julie.Williams@fredonia.edu or 716-673-3202, or to go to the SUNY Fredonia website and click on the Communications Disorders link.
