Carnegie Community Engagement Classification

A strategic action in the The Power of Fredonia Plan is to "build the documented record of structures, support, and visibility of community engagement so that Fredonia can be considered for external recognition, such as the Carnegie Elective Community Engagement Classification (2015)."

Announced in January 2015, Fredonia has earned the Carnegie Foundation's Community Engagement Elective Classification.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's Classification for Community Engagement is an elective classification for campuses where there exists collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. According to the Carnegie Foundation, “the purpose of community engagement is the partnership of college and university knowledge and resources with those of the public and private sectors to enrich scholarship, research, and creative activity; enhance curriculum, teaching and learning; prepare educated, engaged citizens; strengthen democratic values and civic responsibility; address critical societal issues; and contribute to the public good.”

The Carnegie Classification was pursued by a task force appointed in March 2013 by Vice President of Engagement and Economic Development, Kevin Kearns.
