Housed in Mason Hall, the School of Music's facilities have expanded in accordance with our growing music programs. The Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall is a state-of-the-art, 500-seat concert space, complete with backstage areas, offices, and expanded facilities for Sound Recording Technology. This hall is a wonderful complement to our other performance venues, including the intimate Diers Recital Hall, the grand King Concert Hall, and the multiple theatres within the renowned Rockefeller Arts Center.
The School of Music also boasts two state-of-the-art music technology labs, equipped with a total of 30 Apple iMac Computers, each connected to an XP-30 multitimbral MIDI synthesizer. These labs may be used by musicians for ear-training, notation and composition. The numerous software titles available for student use include the following: Practica Musica, Auralia, Digital Performer, Logic Studio, Pro Tools, Band in a Box, iLife (GarageBand, iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, iWeb), RapidWeaver, and Finale. Extra hardware also includes Blue Snowball microphones and numerous stations for video input. The lab is open for student use every day during the hours posted.
The School of Music is also home to the Robert and Marilyn Maytum Music Rehearsal Halls. Named after two of the region’s most significant business and community leaders and philanthropists, the $3 million addition includes two rooms which are two to three times the size of any pre-existing rehearsal space in Mason Hall. They were designed and built specifically to accommodate large band and orchestral groups which have grown to as many as 120 members. The new halls not only meet modern-day occupancy codes, but special engineering was also implemented to address sound volume and quality issues, to ensure hearing safety for students and faculty.
There are more than 100 open practice rooms (most with windows), available to all Fredonia students. Each room has an upright piano; piano majors are assigned a locked practice room equipped with at least one grand piano. There are also several small ensemble practice rooms for student chamber rehearsals, and large ensemble practice rooms for major ensemble rehearsals.
