Hungary: Culture & Memory in Central Europe
This course will provide students with an immersive experience in the rich and complex history of Hungary. Its location in Central Europe has made it a crossroads, occupied by the Romans, Celts, Huns, Saxons, Ottomans, Habsburgs, Soviet Union, and most importantly, the Magyars. Students will divide their time between Budapest, the nation's cosmopolitan capital on the beautiful Danube, and Szeged, a university town on the great plains of Hungary. We will use physical sites - museums, houses of worship, cultural institutions, seats of power, public squares and parks, memorials, and monuments - as our classroom. Classes on Hungarian history, culture, and contemporary issues taught by University of Szeged faculty will augment and provide context for excursions and enable students to connect historical content with lived experience. While Hungarian guides and professors will direct much of the program, Fredonia faculty will lead tours and meet with students regularly to discuss and analyze what they are learning. Students will also have ample time to explore the distinctive architecture and food heritage, stroll along the Danube, attend cultural performances, and relax at the characteristic cafés, squares, ruin gardens, and thermal spas.
