Morocco: Ancient Land, Modern Times

Course Description:  Moroccans pride themselves on their generous hospitality and conviviality. Local Moroccan families will host students for ten days in Fez, the capital of the Idrisids, a UNESCO world heritage medina, and the home of Al-Karaouine, the oldest university in the world, days. Based in Fez we will study Berber customs, language, and history; and make day trips to see the old Roman city of Volubilis, the neighboring birthplace of Moulay Idriss, the blue city of Chefchaouen and its artisans, and the mountain region of Ifrane (Moroccan Alps), and the capital of Rabat.  We will also explore Fez itself, and study various aspects of Moroccan life through tours, lectures and hands on activities. The spoken languages will be English, French and Moroccan Arabic (Darija). Lecture topics will include Fez the medina, history and space; Volubilis: archaeology, Berber language and culture, Islam, irrigation, music, and colonialism. 

The last week will take us to the Sahara desert where we will meet Bedouins, spend the night at an oasis in Er Rashida, and move on to Ouarzazate, Marakesh, and Essouira to see southern Morocco. The sojourn will end in Cassablanca. The focus of the course is an introduction to the history and culture of Morocco from Carthage to the present. This is a three credit, interdisciplinary study abroad course in history, religious studies, and language.
