Homecoming 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of our Department of Geosciences, a Science Conference, the 35th anniversary of the Fredonia Radio Systems’ FM station, the 25th anniversary of Sigma Kappa Sorority, a play in Bartlett Theatre, spectacular concerts, great athletic contests and a host of other special events.
Two alumni will be recognized for outstanding achievement in their respective fields: on Saturday, Oct. 12, Constance (Wheat) Batty, Ph.D., ’54, (Education) and Edward “Ted” Dedee, ’71, (Music Education) will be recognized at the Alumni Awards Brunch, to be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room (formerly known as the Campus Center or the student union). Rounding out the program will be special recognition of all of our Golden Grads (those alums from the Class of 1963 and before) and all honored classes.
Also on Saturday, the College of Education will be holding its Seventh Annual Discussion and Reception: Sharing Ideas, Catching Up with Friends at 10 a.m. at the Alumni House, 286 Central Ave. Take time to catch up with old friends and current and emeriti faculty while enjoying light refreshments. You can also attend the many athletic contests scheduled for the weekend. On Saturday, the Men’s Soccer Team plays SUNY Oswego at 1 p.m. The traditional Men’s Alumni Soccer game will be held at 9 a.m., and our Women’s Basketball Team will host a special alumni match at noon in Steele Hall. Don’t miss the action!
There are several free musical performances as well. The Fredonia Reunion Jazz Ensemble will perform Friday at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. On Saturday, Rosch hosts a spectacular School of Music Choral Showcase Concert (featuring the College Choir, Chamber Choir and Women’s Choir) at 2 p.m., and at 8 p.m., the College Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert in King Concert Hall. If you can stay the entire weekend, the Fredonia Wind Quintet will perform a free concert in Rosch at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
The Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery will offer a free exhibit entitled, “XING Perspectives” (a collaborative exhibit by international artists Jan Theun van Rees and Jacqueline Kooter) on all three days, and Moon Over Buffalo, a Tony Award-nominated play, will be performed on Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2 p.m., in Bartlett Theater. Tickets are $18 and may be purchased after Aug. 26 by calling the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office at 716-673-3501.
The Classes of 1953, 1958, 1973 and 2003 will celebrate anniversaries with special events. For all of the other honored classes – the classes of 1963, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998, and 2008, there will be an Honored Class Multi-Reception held in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Complimentary light refreshments and a cash beer/wine bar will be available. Look for your respective area. Specific downtown establishments will be designated as further gathering spots later that evening. Look for the location assignments at the Homecoming Registration Table.
