This scholarship is named in honor of Geraldine S. Werner who devoted her life to working with disabled students as a special education teacher in the Fredonia and Rochester areas. Mrs. Werner ran the full scale in special education, from acting as an aide to a special education teacher for a full year, to 16 years as a teacher of severely handicapped children at the Mary Cariola Children's Center (MCCC) in Al Sigl Center of Rochester NY, to 15 years as a supervisor of all teachers at MCCC. Mrs. Werner graduated from Fredonia Normal and started teaching in 1929. She retired in 1977. For 10 years, Mrs. Werner taught arts and crafts at a summer camp for the disabled, many of whom never had a camping experience. Mrs. Werner has served on two boards of directors at Al Sigl Center (Medical Motor Service & A.R.C) for over 20 years.
This tuition based scholarship is awarded to a junior, selected by the faculty, who demonstrates a high degree of scholarship and potential. |
