Completion of this program meets the advanced degree requirement for individuals seeking Professional Certification in New York State to teach mathematics at the Middle Childhood level (grades 5 - 9) or at the Adolescence level (grades 7 - 12).

Admissions Requirement
To be admitted to the program without deficiencies, the candidate should have:

NYS Initial Certification in Mathematics/Adolescence Education, with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and coursework equivalent to:
MATH 210 - Discrete Mathematics
MATH 223 - University Calculus III
MATH 323 - Intermediate Real Analysis
MATH 331 - Abstract Algebra
At least two of the following courses:
MATH 341 Geometry
MATH 381 History of Mathematics
STAT 350 Probability and Statistics

or

NYS Initial Certification in Mathematics/Middle Childhood Education, with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and coursework equivalent to:
MATH 123 University Calculus II
MATH 210 Discrete Mathematics
MATH 231 Linear Algebra
MATH 341 Geometry
MATH 381 History of Mathematics
MAED 301, 302, and 303 Mathematics for School Teachers I, II, and III
A statistics course

Program Requirements
The program requires thirty credit hours distributed as follows:

  1. A course in research methods
  2. A minimum of three courses covering three of the following categories:

    • historical, philosophical or comparative foundations of education
    • design and evaluation of mathematics curricula
    • instructional methods
    • use of educational technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics
    • psychological foundations of education
  3. A minimum of four courses covering four of the following categories:

    • algebra or analysis
    • geometry or topology
    • number theory, probability or statistics
    • history or philosophy of mathematics
    • applications of mathematics
    • any approved course in mathematics
  4. MAED 602 Mathematics Education Seminar
  5. MAED 690 Graduate Project

The student's advisor or the department chair must approve any course taken to satisfy these requirements.
