The Women’s Student Union will be hosting various free events throughout the month of March and the beginning of April in honor of Women’s “Herstory” Month, with the theme, “Women’s Herstory Month: Feminist Past, Present and Future.”
Programs will review the history and progress of feminism over the years. Events include:
- On Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m., Herstory Jeopardy will be offered in Williams Center Room S204ABC, to learn about topics involving gender and inequality. Teams will consist of four players and will be competing for “feminist prizes.”
- On Thursday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m., a screening of, “A Litany for Survival: The Life and Work of Audre Lorde,” will be held in McEwen Hall Room 202. Ms. Lorde was an African American poet who wrote about topics such as love and anger, civil rights and sexuality, family politics and the glories of nature. She was a poet, lover, mother and warrior whose life was cut short after a long battle with breast cancer.
- On Wednesday, March 11 at 1, 3 and 6 p.m., FredASSIST will present “Porntopia,” in Williams Center Room S204ABC. FredASSIST and WSU are teaming up to support the “LET’S GET IT ON” campaign with three presentation sessions explaining how the media has created a “porn culture.” Participants are invited to learn how to cultivate literacy about real sex, fantasy sex, body image, media secrets and consent. Each discussion time includes a one hour program followed by a question and answer session. Sessions are capped at 25 attendees and space is limited.
- On Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m., in Williams Center Room S204ABC, the “Riot! Grrrl! Zine Making Workshop” is scheduled.
- On Monday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m., in McEwen Hall Room 202, Opal Tometi, co-founder of Black Lives Matter and executive director of Black Alliance for Justice Immigration (BAJI), will give a presentation.
- On Wednesday, March 25 at 7 p.m., in Williams Center Room S204ABC, the Center for Multicultural Affairs (CMA) will offer the educational panel, “See ‘Em Say It.”
- On Thursday, March 26 at 5 p.m. in the English Reading Room in Fenton Hall, book discussion of Alexis De Veaux's novel, "Yabo," a Lambda finalist in lesbian fiction.
- On Tuesday, March 31 at 7 p.m., in McEwen Hall Room 209, Alexis De Veaux, poet, activist and author of “Yabo” will be discussing, “Intersectionality and the Future Everyday,” as the second annual Gender and Social Change Lecture.
- On Wednesday, April 1 at 5 p.m., in Williams Center Room S204ABC, the Chautauqua County League of Women Voters will present the program, “Be a Part of the Solution!”
- On Wednesday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m., in McEwen Room 209, a discussion, “Making Queer and Feminist Movements More Inclusive,” will feature Julia Serano, an acclaimed writer, performer and speaker. Her subjects of expertise include, sex, gender, sexuality, feminism, queer, transgender, bisexual and activism.
